Your very first ultrasound
Dear Cyrus,
Today is a Wednesday and we finally got to see you for the first time. Your mom went into work, barely able to contain herself, knowing that later in the day we would be able to look on the little ultrasound monitor and view you inside of her womb.
The weather wasn’t rainy or too overcast (which is rare in Oregon in April) today, and it was hard not to be in a good mood. Your mom and I met at the doctor’s office, she drove there from work and I drove there from our home on Barberry street in Beaverton.
We went through the requisite paperwork, the usual vital checks and discussion with the nurse. After a long wait, what seemed like an eternity, they wheeled the ultrasound machine into the exam room and turned it on. After a few minutes, they squirted some alien looking gel all over your mom’s stomach, and put the ultrasound wand just below her belly button.
And this was the first thing we saw
You. A little wriggling you. You are so small, in fact, that you are about the size of a gummy bear or a grape. You are a little past 9 weeks old, and your calculated due date is November 24th, 2011.
Your mom cried the moment she saw you up on the monitor and heard your heart beat. It was amazing and unbelievable–there’s really a tiny person inside of your mom. It is suddenly very real and less of an abstract concept.
Your mom decided to call you “Biscuit” because we aren’t sure if you were a boy or a girl just yet, but we know that you’re a bun in the oven.
That very first moment, the moment we finally got to see you, I know will forever be etched in our memory. It’s been such a good day, in fact, that when I drove home I bought a giant Snickers cake to celebrate you and your heart beat. We love you already, and we’ve only known you for a very brief time.
